![]() (“Abroad” is such a classically English word.) At first – the dwarves, the vampire village, the running of the bulls – this is a reason for Pratchett to exercise his overactive imagination in amusing vignettes. The first half is a sequence of comedic setpieces as a pair of old biddies and their exasperated younger friend bumble their way through Foreign Parts. The witches don’t actually arrive in Genua until halfway through the book. ![]() Witches Abroad, as the title suggests, is a road story. The three witches must set out for the distant city of Genua to find Magrat’s young charge Ella (as in Cinderella) and free her from the manipulations of her other, evil Fairy Godmother, Lilith – who also happens to be the de facto ruler of Genua, having deposed the old Baron. In the tiny hilltop kindom of Lancre, the witch Desiderata Hollow passes away – and passes on her magic wand and responsibilities as a Fairy Godmother to Magrat, the youngest of Granny Weatherwax’s coven. Witches Abroad by Terry Pratchett (1991) 286 p. Next up, we’re back to the witches of Lancre with Lords and Ladies. It just didn’t strike much of a chord with me personally, and I find myself with very little to say about it. I can believe all that, and I can appreciate why so many others love it. ![]() I just don’t find Pratchett’s ruminations on religious belief as engaging as those on racism or politics or sexism or any number of other things.Īs I said, it’s one of Pratchett’s most beloved books, and apparently he received plenty of approving letters from believers and non-believers alike, praising his depiction of faith, belief, and the critical differences between organised religion and a personal relationship with God. Being an agnostic or an atheist doesn’t mean you don’t have to cope with religion’s impact on society, but in Australia it has very little effect on me compared to if I were an atheist in, say, Alabama. The best explanation I can come to for why Small Gods doesn’t engage me is because I’m not religious, I wasn’t raised religious, and I live in probably one of the most irreligious countries in the Western world. I remembered very little of Small Gods, and I’ve learnt on this rereading project that this usually means the book didn’t make much of an impact on me the first time around and won’t the second. This is a case where I really have to differ from public opinion. Accompanying Vorbis, Pratchett’s latest Machiavellian villain of iron-cast belief, Brutha thus sets out on the journey of a lifetime to Omnia’s neighbour Ephebe, with none of his retinue suspecting their god is riding along in Brutha’s backpack. Om clings to Brutha like a drowning man to a life raft, well aware that if Brutha’s belief wavers then his own existence will be imperilled, as he tries to figure out how to make the people of Omnia properly believe again.īrutha, meanwhile, has been recruited for a special mission by one of the Church’s deacons for of his eidetic memory. Shrunk down into the humble body of a tortoise and with his omnipotence vanished, Om finds he has only one true believer left: the naive young novice Brutha, working in the gardens of the Church’s great Citadel. Om’s problem is that people no longer believe in him as a god per se, but rather in the institution of the church. On the Discworld, as we’ve already learned, belief can create reality – and so gods in turn are reliant on their believers for their continued existence. Pratchett takes us to the vast desert kingdom of Omnia, a religious autocracy built around worship of the god Om. It’s a standalone – possibly the most complete standalone in the series, taking place far from Ankh-Morpork or Lancre, with only a brief cameo appearance by the Librarian and of course Death. This is widely regarded as one of Pratchett’s finest novels, certainly in the early days of the Discworld series. Small Gods by Terry Pratchett (1991) 400 p. Its skies are dense with autonomous drones patrolling the streets and ferrying parcels streets are filled with a mix of old gas-guzzlers and Tesla-style self-driving cars and its landmarks are emblazoned with corporate-fascist banners and bright holographic projections. It can be rough and experimental in places, but I have to hand it to Ubisoft for being willing to take chances like this.Legion’s map is a vision of a near-future London metropolitan area, and similar to Watch Dogs 2’s compressed version of the San Francisco Bay Area it is beautifully detailed and immediately recognizable – but this time it’s also starkly different from how we know it. That lends it a much more sandboxy feel than the previous games because any given character can make the same mission feel dramatically different. Legion’s clever twist makes this third game in the series play like a hacker version of State of Decay, where every NPC can be recruited as a playable character and each has their own weapons, abilities, and traits that can give them very different playstyles. Not so much that I drive more carefully or anything, but after playing Watch Dogs: Legion I think about it a little bit more. After decades of running over pedestrians by the dozen in open-world action games without a second thought, it’s actually a little bit unsettling to think that each of them might have unique talents and even the potential to be a hero. ![]() ![]() I don't just want you to watch a video of someone talking about design, I want you to MAKE design! An example of a call chain through the SHEIN app resulting in clipboard access Identifying the code We then performed a dynamic analysis by running the app in an instrumented environment to observe the code, including how it read the clipboard and sent its contents to a remote server. We first performed a static analysis of the app to identify the relevant code responsible for the behavior. The following analysis details how we identified and verified the presence of the SHEIN app’s clipboard behavior, analyzing SHEIN app version 7.9.2 (SHA-256: ff07dc6e237acd19cb33e35c60cb2ae52c460aac76bc27116d8de76abec66c51). We also share this research with the larger security community to emphasize the importance of collaboration in the effort to improve security for all. In this blog, we detail how we identified the SHEIN app’s clipboard behavior and how Android users can protect themselves against clipboard-based attacks. We would also like to thank the Google team for the improvements implemented to the Android platform to protect users from the risks associated with anomalous clipboard access. We would like to thank Google’s Android Security Team as well as the SHEIN team for their efforts and collaboration in addressing this issue. In May 2022, Google informed us and we confirmed that SHEIN removed the behavior from the application. We reported our findings to Google, the Play Store operator, leading to an investigation by their Android Security Team. Even if SHEIN’s clipboard behavior involved no malicious intent, this example case highlights the risks that installed applications can pose, including those that are highly popular and obtained from the platform’s official app store. SHEIN’s Android application is published on the Google Play Store with over 100 million downloads. While we are not specifically aware of any malicious intent behind the behavior, we assessed that this behavior was not necessary for users to perform their tasks on the app. Microsoft discovered that an old version of the SHEIN Android application periodically read the contents of the Android device clipboard and, if a particular pattern was present, sent the contents of the clipboard to a remote server. ![]() Moreover, these types of attacks misuse a legitimate system feature rather than exploit a vulnerability, making the issue more challenging to mitigate. ![]() Examples even exist of attackers hijacking and replacing the clipboard contents for malicious purposes, such as modifying a copied cryptocurrency wallet address before the user pastes it into a crypto wallet app or chat message. The whole setup is somewhat reminiscent of older home console life-simulation games which often weren’t polished. Its gameplay has, unsurprisingly, been compared to Animal Crossing and it’s pretty easy to see why, as much of your time is spent tending the island or decorating spaces. You can spend your time on the harmonic island by farming, harvesting, fishing, and so on, as well as go on adventures with characters like Donald Duck and Goofy. Here are five upcoming titles to keep on your radar.ĭescribed as “a hybrid between a life-sim and an adventure game,” Disney Dreamlight Valley will let you create a character and meet with iconic Disney and Pixar characters within its world. I want more Sims that isn’t the typical Sims I play every day. Sometimes I want something a little different, but not too different. But even as I consistently come back to The Sims 4, it doesn’t always scratch my itch. I got really into decorating, remodeling homes, and building houses (and community lots) from the ground up. What first started as a life simulator where I’d focus on building families and generations, later became a more involved architect simulation game. When I turned on the system the next morning, my Emby Server dashboard barely showed any movement. It turns out that my Shield TV was going to sleep midway through the scan. Remember earlier when I mentioned that the initial tasks took days to complete? Well, here’s why. Even if you have a gigabit network, it’s a fairly common issue for the Shield TV to drop the speed down to 100 Mbps. Once that happens, Emby won’t be able to playback the video without stuttering and stopping.Īlso, check your Ethernet speed to make sure you’re running at 1 Gbps and not 100 Mbps.
